Escape by Magic: Book One is the type of book that you would want to read on a calm afternoon. The storyline is simple and entertaining, with the characters being charming. The reader gets to live with the characters as they pursue their interests and engage in sometimes silly but fun activities. I like the sense of humor the author has as readers will more than once come across a comical text which will make them laugh out loud. The characters hold sweet conversations and work together in whatever task they have. The storyline is exciting to follow as the author wrote a laid-back and easily comprehensible novel.
We are introduced to Kris and Sammy at the start of the book. Kris is an artistic and creative character. She is a resourceful friend and fun to hang around. I like how the author described the character. Abbygail DeCoursey is amazing at the depiction of characters. I could picture Kris, in her blonde ponytail and rocking shorts looking all cool in her tomboy style. I could tell the type of person she had based on the words the author used. Her friend Sammy was also described perfectly. I liked it when the two spent time together as I appreciated the bond they had.
So the two girls as they are growing up, they get to experiment with different situations and even try out new things. Like many girls their age, they have some things that they fantasize about. Sammy and Kris decide to play a made-up game that is unreal. Imagine escaping in a parallel universe, where things are handled differently. The girls get to experience a different world from that they have been knowing, then one day something unexpected happens. Will the characters get through the fantasy? Can they survive through Shades and Xo7’s schemes to get to the goal? I enjoyed the turn the story took, making the reader anxious to read more.
The suspense as the girls figure out the objective was astounding. Abbygail DeCoursey writes exceptionally, revealing the information in bits to increase yearn to read more. Escape by Magic: Book One is an excellent book for readers who enjoy short reads that have thrilling plots and fascinating characters. The development of the story is gradual and interesting to follow. It is a great book for young readers and people who want to get back to intense reading.
The characters have distinct traits, fitting perfectly in the roles they were given. It is impossible not to like any Abbygail DeCoursey character. The illustrations in the book are commendable too. They helped break the monotony that is usually found in books that only have text. The drawings are modest yet refreshing to look at. One could see the details in every sketch, be it the size of the character, the facial expression, the mood they are in, the outfit they wear and the conversations happening around them. I recommend Escape by Magic: Book One.
