Almost as important as the right golf club is the right golf caddy. Caddies are “the golfer’s entire support system during the game,” writes Joe Tyney, author of the book Everyone Needs a Caddy. Likewise, there’s a reason professional athletes hire a coach, states Tyney. No matter how well you know the game, everyone benefits from having someone intimately familiar with the field, which can help guide and develop your performance.
Like a caddy on the green, Tyney is a coach and leader in the office. His book Everyone Needs a Caddy helps readers to recognize and develop their own attributes as well as those of their employees. Joe Tyney is definitely an author who knows and cares about how to manage large groups of people in a professional setting. Among shelves of books by self-proclaimed, self-help gurus, Everyone Needs a Caddy stands out as a book not about personal opinion, but written from a lifetime of research and intellectual investment.
A large component of Tyney’s focus is attitude, because attitude really is everything. He talks about visualizing what you want, not what you don’t want, and learning to say things in a positive way. Your subconscious mind, Tyney writes, is jumping to help you, so tell yourself what you want to happen. In his example, a golfer thinks, “I don’t want to hit this ball into the water.” Immediately his 200-meter swing dissolves into five meters and his ball lands in the water. Instead, that golfer should have thought, “I want to hit this ball across the water into the next green.”
The novel is cleverly put together with a golfing theme. Each chapter begins with a golfing metaphor, chapter lengths are equal to length to par at each hole, etc. However, building the book around a game of golf limits the book to niche demographic, therefore narrowing its appeal to a larger audience. Upon reading, the information is understandable and educational even if you know nothing about golf, and actually includes many non-golf related examples. The theme of golf sets this book apart, and makes it ideal for the business executive who plays golf and has employees.
Everyone Needs a Caddy is informative, engaging and interesting. Its language is business casual, professional without being imperious. Tyney is an author you would trust in your office and on the green.
