An interesting part of the human condition is humanity’s relationship to history and culture. Before the present-day faiths such as Christianity and Islam, there were many cultures who worshiped and told stories of ancient gods of old. From the Ancient Egyptians and the gods of Babylon, to the Roman and Celtic gods, each culture has had their own set of gods, creatures, and myths that drove their belief system and historical events as a whole. One of the most prevalent of these mythologies in our culture today is Greek mythology, and the depiction of the Greek gods is a direct reflection of humanity’s own infallibility.

This deep dive into the myths and legends of old continues in author Donald R. Richter’s, Fairies Sorcery and the Greek Gods. The novel follows a man named Jack, who not only was given the strength to face a deadly threat by God, but has aged backwards to be a younger man to face this threat. As the evil blue fairies threaten to return from their exile back to Earth, Jack must face fairies, magical practitioners, and even ponder his relationship with the Greek gods themselves.

The author immediately showcases a brilliant sense of world-building in this narrative, introducing readers to the protagonist and the mind-blowing events which have occurred thus far. The beauty of this book is that the author writes in a way that introduces new readers to the story quickly, allowing them to get a seamless recap of the previous events in this series without having to read any previous entries. The vivid imagery used in the author’s writing brought this reader into the story and felt instantly transported, from modern-day America to the near-glorious nature of Olympus and beyond.

In a story of gods and mythological creatures, the book instantly draws in readers who enjoy fantasy-driven narratives, ones in which both ancient and modern faiths are explored, and various cultures and their mythical figures are brought into one linear storyline. The inclusion of figures like Baba Yaga, Merlin and the Devil himself, as well as the hierarchy of the different fairies and their lore really showcased a depth of creativity and a passion for lore that helped keep readers invested in the protagonist’s journey. The journey is the key to this story, as it immerses the reader fully into this world that explores the celestial nature of Olympus and the pocket dimensions and realms that the fairies reside in, and overall explores how this clash of creatures and gods impacts humanity as a whole.
