The acclaimed Scottish author William Barclay once said, “There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born and the day we discover why.” Each of us has to go on this journey at one point or another in our lives, and in author Clarence E. “Kip” Vold’s novel Farmer’s Son, Military Career, he explores thoroughly his life. From growing up and experiencing childhood in the farmlands of South Dakota to forsaking a life of farming in favor of something greater, in which a short stint with the military turned into a lifetime career serving the U.S. Military.
This is definitely one of the most in-depth memoirs and biographies that I’ve ever read. Exploring the history of his family, the world he was born into (post Dust-Bowl, during WWII), and his life growing up in not only a large farming family, but growing up with nearly elderly parents and adult aged brothers and sisters, this novel showcased the life of an average Midwest American man growing up and dedicating his life to the armed forces of his nation.
This is definitely a novel for anyone who enjoys reading memoirs, biographies, stories of average people living their lives and going after their ambitions, or anyone who enjoys stories of military service and military life in general. What really fascinated me were stories the author told of his childhood and in comparison the changes he made when confronted with different people and aspects of life outside of the one he knew. A story of his first time meeting a man of color in the military after a childhood having never met anyone of color and seeing his mindset evolve and grow was truly interesting to me personally as a reader and someone who believes in equality amongst us all.
This is a unique and heartfelt story of a man’s life and the journey to get to the point of writing this book to begin with. Stories like this are always fascinating as it allows readers to fell more connected not only with the author, but with people in general. Seeing life through another’s eyes and getting to read these experiences they had make you feel more connected to the world at large, and the author did a marvelous job of bringing w wide audience in.
