Delivering a creative and compelling finale to his adventurous historical fiction series, Rock Lambert’s, Figurehead Book 3: Pact of the Ages, once again, embarks with readers on the continuing voyage of this supernaturally-fueled tale of undying love, hell-bent vengeance, seaworthy action and adventure. As the final book in the trilogy, this addition to the series rounds out the story of the enchanted Figurehead in winning style with its surprising plot twists, revealing a backstory and visages of intense blood curdling action.
To start with, readers are taken back in time to 1676, a time when vengeance was thick in the air, between Captain Silas Pike and Jackal, with each man driven by their brooding desires for revenge. There is a noticeable building of tension as chapters reveal the alternating perspectives of Captain Silas and Jackal as events and experiences culminates into an eventual terrifying showdown between enemies.
Additionally, the story brings into focus, more of the backstory of the characters and clarifies the events which led to their tragic entanglement. Particularly intriguing is the intimate look into the life of the infamous pirate, Jackal, whose backstory from his perspective is a heart-wrenching tale of the creation of the monster he came to be.
Contrarily, the story sharpens focus on events from Silas Pike’s perspective as well, detailing the incredible elements surrounding the supernatural co-existence of his fiancé’s spirit in the beautiful wooden figurehead. We also see Silas as a brokenhearted man focused on avenging the murder of his fiancé at any cost and willing to pay any price to be with her again.
As would be expected after vengeance gets served in 1676, readers are then brought back full circle back to the year 2015, where the story began, with vengeance, taking another stand as the Figurehead and company seek to complete her mission of being reunited with her Captain Pike.
I thoroughly enjoyed Figurehead Book 3: Pact of the Ages. It was easy to be swept into the historical setting, the seafaring fight scenes and the touching yet tragic romance of the story. Initially, the reader is beguiled by the mystery of the figurehead and the chilling supernatural overtones of the overall story, but what one stays for is the palatable emotions, bloody battles and the intense showdown between good and evil, entangled in two different timelines, but ultimately connected. This was a read that was absolutely worthwhile and I do recommend reading the whole series.
