It isn’t often that you come across a book written in the form of a children’s book which happens to also very much pertain to people of all ages. What’s more, to be able to use this medium to share with both children and adults alike a holistic healing plan for those with learning disabilities is a bold move. Grandmother Moon and Roy G. Biv; Seeing Without Seeing is just such a book, and it is a very interesting read.
We begin our journey with the main character Roy G. Biv, which also happens to be the widely used acronym that helps us remember the order and colors of the rainbow. Roy is a very unhappy soul who finds himself at a loss as to how to improve his life. This is the moment that Grandmother Moon enters the picture and presents Roy with a plan to help him overcome his obstacles and improve his life. She explains to him that colors and vibrations have healing aspects that we absorb through our senses. This
awareness will surely help Roy overcome his troubles and find happiness. Roy is, of course, very skeptical in the beginning of the book, but through the monthly lessons with Grandmother Moon he learns the power of healing and applies these lessons to his life.
The author of Grandmother Moon and Roy G. Biv, Katharine Anne Young RN MSNH, is adept at bringing the characters in her book to life. We can feel the despair of Roy in the beginning of the story and I’m sure many of us can identify with some of his struggles in life. Grandmother Moon is larger than life in this tale of sadness, awareness, and understanding. The author does an excellent job of painting her as a caring and loving entity who is there to support Roy and care for him in a way that any good grandmother would. She teaches him about an ancient healing method which is still widely used today, and he employs it in his daily life with great results.
I think the author was very smart to format this as a children’s book while making it relatable to adults as well. Learning disabilities like ADHD are often treated in childhood but the effects can still be present far into adulthood. A book like Grandmother Moon and Roy G. Biv; Seeing Without Seeing can be an invaluable part of a treatment plan for those who suffer from ADHD, depression and other mental health disorders.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to supplement their self-help reading list, or for parents looking to help their children struggling with learning disabilities. It will strike a chord with a wide audience, to be sure.
