Before starting the first chapter of Hell in a Handbasket, the author listed the characters and their relationship with each other. Seeing that there are many characters, this was so thoughtful of the author. By having the character’s list first, the reader familiarizes themselves with some of the names before commencing the first chapter. The characters are listed well, and the reader is able to tell the characters’ respective location and explain who is who. That was a creative move by the author.
Author Timothy J. Amerine takes us to the countryside where the book starts. Billy and his father are having a chat. Being born in the family of farmers, Matthew assures his son Billy that he was destined to be a farmer like his kinfolk before him. Matthew tells his son that both Billy’s grandfather and great-grandfather did farming, so Billy is bound to be like them. I enjoyed their conversation as I could tell it was filled with a father’s love.Their attachment was to string along Billy, as often he wanted to leave, but his father kept pushing it, saying he’d go to the next season.
Another of the characters at the start of the book was Kelly Ann. She knew what she wanted and was ready to put in work to achieve her goal. At 19, Kelly Ann knew she had to be married first before having kids. She was eyeing Billy White and would fantasize about being his wife. Seeing how Billy and his family were affluent, Kelly Ann hoped to be the richest wife in Hanock County. Kelly Ann may seem like an over- ambitious person but I liked her character. She was a go-getter and would not just sit and wait for things to fall into place without working.
Billy eventually left his father’s land and traveled to the west to satisfy his adventurous and curious spirit. It’s on his journey when we learn a lot about his personality and even enjoy reading about his encounters and experiences. The author totally captured the reader’s interest in the way Billy’s story was narrated. He had an eventful life, and everything about him was dauntless. I enjoyed reading about the love life of Billy and the women he met. Amerine wrote a fantastic plot which readers will fall in love with at least one character.
The book is written using an amazing style. It is easy to understand the content and follow every action by the characters. The literature stylistic, devices used are commendable. The author was clear with the storyline from the beginning and it was easy to follow the plot.
This book is for all who enjoy reading works of fiction which has romance, adventure, and exciting escapades. Each page gets as interesting as the previous. At no point does the reader feel as if the plot has gone bland. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys literature to get a hold of it.
