All of us at one time or another has been in a situation we now look back on as a
mistake, something we deeply regret and know we could have saved ourselves a lot of
time and energy if we had just taken a clearer look at the signs before us. Unfortunately,
we don’t typically see the red flags in people we care about immediately because we
want to see the best in them. But the truth of the matter is some people you can’t save
and some are downright detrimental to your own wellbeing. That is what we explore in
this novel, Hell on Horrsman Road by Honest Chunk.
The book starts with plenty of backstory to properly set up the tale readers are about
have unfolded before their eyes. The book shows the ways how previous generations of
poor parenting skills can greatly damage their offspring, and subsequently continue the
vicious cycle of traumatic childhoods throughout generations is tragic but also
enlightening. Readers see how it all cascades down the line and affects the lives of the
generations after; and so on and so forth. It may be a sad reality but it also can help us
learn from the mistakes made that could have saved others from being hurt as well.
When the author of this book meets Erron, she is impressed by his charm and good
looks and the fact he seems very put-together. He seems to like her just as much and
they quickly become close friends. But his behavior begins to change and he flip-flops
frequently from wanting to hang out with her constantly, to pushing her away
completely. When the latter happens, he usually becomes an intense and completely
different person than the author was formerly used to. It is quite the departure and left
her feeling utterly perplexed.
This only leads to further issues, as the true nature of her friend is slowly but surely
revealed. This book may be telling the story of these individuals and the repercussions
of befriending a sociopath, but it also teaches a greater lesson of how it all could have
been prevented in the first place, and why you should look out for red flags in people the
moment you catch wind of one. It could save you from a lot of detriment and heartache
in the end.
I personally also enjoyed the writer’s personality which shined through every page while
leaving no stone unturned in her recounting of the past events. This is a book that I’d
recommend for anyone to read; parent, adult child, or other.
