Where is God? This is a question many people ask, especially when they feel He is far away from them. In truth, He is closer than we think, not only in terms of His spiritual presence but also in relation to the book which many of us have close to hand. That book, of course, is the Bible. In his new book, Hidden in Plain Sight, author Kevin Overbeck reminds us of this fact as he encourages us to open the Bible’s pages to discover the truths and other messages God wants us to discover.
Of course, the Bible is not a short book. Where should we start when reading it? Some would suggest the beginning is best but that might mean missing out on stories and Biblical characters which are more relevant to us in the here and now. Overbeck encourages us to use reading plans as a means of discovering chapters and verses that might relate more closely to where we are currently. You don’t need to search far for such a reading plan, however, as Overbeck’s book serves as a guide to those Bible stories which may have something to teach us today. He references parables, psalms, and tales about well-known Biblical characters, including Elijah and David, and asks us to reflect on our own lives as we relate his chosen scripture verses to ourselves.
It’s fair to say that Christians, i.e. those people who have already chosen to follow God, will gain much from Overbeck’s work. Each chapter serves as a meditation of sorts, as he brings key moments from the Bible to life before raising questions that will encourage meaningful thoughts as we ponder God’s word. To help us further, Overbeck also uses personal testimony as a means of explaining how stories from the Bible have related to his own life experiences. Not only is his writing insightful but it’s also very easy to read, so will be useful to both Biblical scholars and those who simply want an encouraging book to bring home what God might be saying to them.
Will non-Christians (or not yet Christians) gain something from Overbeck’s book? Almost certainly. For those afraid to open the Bible in fear that it might be impenetrable and irrelevant, Hidden in Plain Sight will prove to be a Godsend (perhaps literally). Overbeck doesn’t use long words or language which might confuse those not used to scripture or church sermons. He writes simply, making sure his book will be understood by everyone, no matter where they are in their walk with God. The questions he raises at the end of each chapter are universal – case in point ‘What temptations in your life do you need to find an escape from?’ – so even those without a faith will discover much to ponder upon.
The Bible is not a dusty old book that has no relevance to our lives today. This is something you might know already but if not, Kevin Overbeck’s book will act as a worthy reminder. Not only will you learn more about scripture, but you’ll be able to connect it to where you currently are in your life. You might also hear God speaking to you as you read through the book’s pages. What might He be saying to you today? That message, as you’ll discover as you read Overbeck’s work, is not hidden away from you.
Hidden in Plain Sight is a compelling reminder of God’s omnipresence and a call to embrace the beauty of His subtle yet powerful work. Whether you’re new to faith or looking to deepen your understanding, this book will leave a lasting impact.
