One woman’s fortitude, perseverance, and dedication are excellently displayed in this touching memoir by author Mrs. Anthony. Here, the author introduces us to her vibrant childhood and as she comes of age, she meets her husband-to-be, Tony. Due to their different cultures, their relationship was frowned upon by some of Tony’s relatives but despite this, the two formalized their union at a beautiful wedding.
Soon after, her once-happy marriage turned turbulent mainly because of Tony’s drinking habit, the dwindling businesses which he so tenaciously held on to, and her husband’s unwise money decisions, all which plunged them into further problems. More cracks began to appear soon after their daughter’s birth, one which the author hoped instead would mark a new beginning for them.
However, this was not to be and things take a darker turn as she had to contend with worse in the coming years. She struggled to maintain her sanity and her marriage, as the financial situation worsened and her husband’s health deteriorated. This powerful and emotionally arresting memoir was one of the best I have read so far. It is heartbreaking to watch someone indulge in a self-sabotaging habit and not know how to help them. This story describes the agony, frustration, hopelessness, and disillusionment the author felt at watching her husband fade away in sickness because of his addiction.
The most notable aspect of this memoir is the maternal and spousal tone present in the story. Mrs. Antony’s love for her family and spouse is visibly displayed. I could not help but empathize with her on various occasions. With courage, determination, and resilience, she manages to conceal her frustration and pain, work tirelessly to pay the bills while also being an exemplary mother to her children.
Though the book has a poignant ending, it hints at the possibility of a sequel which I would love to read. I appreciate the author for telling her story. I Am Woman: Book One: My Journey, My Tony by Mrs. Anthony is an exceptionally accomplished work that readers will find absorbing and resonant. It is truly a must-read!
