In his deeply illuminating political thriller Immigration!: A Tale of Political Intrigue, author Keith Salmon explores the UK’s long and often arduous battle to eradicate the hundreds of thousands of migrants who have infiltrated the continent illegally in recent years.

James Greene, the UK Border Agency’s Head of Immigration, has been strongly cautioned about the rigors of his new role. He, on the other hand, has such a strong belief in himself that he refuses to take criticism, dismissing the cautions and recommendations as results of envy. In his new post, his Parliamentary Private Secretary, David Lingham, has identified critical and sensitive impending duties for him. They include dispelling the belief that the Agency bears the responsibility of demonstrating an asylum applicant’s ineligibility to reside in the country, repatriating foreign national criminals to their home countries, and addressing the problem of asylum seekers or illegal immigrants who, after filing for asylum, disappear into the black market.

It does not take long for the Press to begin publishing negative articles on James’ purported goals. He tries his best to stop them, but only succeeds when the Permanent Under Secretary intervenes. Remarkably, James soon draws the attention of the Prime Minister, who dubs him “Mr. Fixit” for his skillful management of complex immigration issues. His outstanding work also guarantees and secures him of a much sought-after position in the government. Meanwhile, his revolutionary fervor and promising career are shattered by the unwholesome acceptance of his ideas, which leads to hundreds of tragic situations and unforeseen results, leaving him extremely overwhelmed.

This novel, which is more of an exposition rather than just an entertaining piece of fiction, reveals prevalent administrative issues throughout UK and Europe’s politics in general. The narrative’s setting, the Immigration Docket, lures readers into a labyrinth of treachery, deceit, self-centeredness, and dishonesty driven more by personal gain than by the welfare of the nation. Expertly utilizing the protagonist and several other nefarious characters whose paths entwine in a web of treachery and hostility, the author has unveiled a plethora of information and innovative fixes that any nation, not just the UK, can quickly put into practice to halt the enormous losses that have been repeatedly demonstrated to happen worldwide. Nevertheless, considering the intricacies involved, his work still raises concerns about the procedures’ long-run effectiveness.

Excellent writing and research has gone into Immigration!: A Tale of Political Intrigue. Not only does the author confront difficult subjects head-on and show courage in admitting his own prejudice, but he also does an excellent job of opinionated but interesting fact-finding. Regardless of one’s stance or country of origin, his carefully considered points, supported by evidence from peer reviews, provide a clear picture of the immigration crisis that the UK and other developed nations are currently facing. With its great execution and engaging substance, this is a book that will be hard to put down.  Immigration!: A Tale of Political Intrigue is a compelling read for anyone interested in politics, social justice, or simply a good thriller.
