One thing that can be both good and bad for people around the world is the sense of curiosity most people have about others and the world around them. As Zora Neale Hurston once said, “Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.” In author John D. King’s book, Just out of Curiosity, a young college student and scientist finds his life turned upside down out of a moment of pure curiosity.
The novel explores Robert Novaro, a young graduate student who discovers a new method of separating the isotopes from certain metals. His mentor takes this method and applies it to uranium, which attracts the attention of the military. After his mentor has a heart attack, Robert takes his mentor’s notebook to photocopy its contents so he can understand what his mentor did with his method. This sends him on a downward spiral that sees him facing prison, kidnapping, a corrupt government and a catastrophic worldwide event like no other.
The author does an excellent job of making this story a very character driven narrative. Approaching the book by diving head-first into the drama of the protagonist’s struggle as his scientific curiosity leads to a life-changing path that is forced upon him. The author uses a quick-method of storytelling to put readers right into the action rather than take the time to build up the backstory and setting of the narrative, giving readers a chance to truly focus on the characters themselves.
This is a novel for anyone who enjoys drama, action, suspense and books that feature a blend of fiction with real-life scientific study. As a fan of the genres, it was fascinating to see the series of events that unfolded from the protagonist’s decision, and how it affected those already in his life and those who came after. The author’s descriptive work really captures the reader’s imagination and brings the story to life.
This was a fast-paced, intense and character-driven narrative that features a unique cast of characters and a scientifically driven plot that showcases the dangers of atomic weaponry, corrupt governments and the scientists who are pushed to the limits when faced with untold danger. With a hint of romance, espionage and thriller style storytelling, this was a marvelous read from author John D. King, so be sure to grab your copy of Just out of Curiosity today!
