In this follow-up to Inceptions: The Kate and Robert Chronicles, Kate is now Mrs. Robert Beckham, thanks to a whirlwind romance with the handsome, and somewhat mysterious law enforcement officer. Kate and Robert embark on their first experiences as a married couple, starting with a luxurious California honeymoon. Following the romantic getaway that includes wine-tasting tours, paddleboard lessons, and plenty of chemistry fueled sexual escapades; the young, attractive couple starts their life together. They interact with friends and family, shop for fancy new cars, and take a trip to England and Ireland to visit with more of Robert’s family. Throughout even the most mundane interactions, Kate and Robert can barely keep their hands off one another, and take the opportunity to enjoy one another’s bodies whenever the chance arises; much of the story revolves around their insatiable desires. Their sex scenes include anal play and some mild dominance and submission, an appropriate nod to the male lead’s personality, but the titillating content doesn’t push any potentially offensive boundaries.
Their over-the-top romantic relationship is a delicious fantasy, for the characters and the reader, but it’s not without its difficulties and uncertainty. From the beginning, Kate struggles with her new husband’s controlling ways, and questions what has happened in his past to cause him to be so overprotective. Watching him choose her clothes and decide her daily activities is a somewhat disconcerting, though as the story goes on, Kate becomes more trusting and at times seems to truly enjoy it. Fortunately, as Kate adjusts to the relationship, it becomes less uncomfortable to read. The author succeeds in creating an emotional connection to Kate’s character and it’s easy to empathize with Kate as she works through her feelings. Though Kate trusts her gorgeous husband would never hurt her, she fears a dark side, and he shows brief flashes of violence during a few bar fights and altercations. Traveling to England and Ireland, Kate is able to delve deeper into her vigilant husband’s past.
Other than the search for what it is that makes Robert tick, there is little conflict to drive Kate and Robert’s story forward. Their travels are entertaining and their amorous activities are exciting and varied, but through all of their experiences nothing truly compelling happens. It’s as if You and I is a bridge between the first and third books in the series, filling in the gaps and providing a foundation for Kate and Robert’s marriage before the real action happens. As the final chapter hints, there will be more action and suspense in the next book in the series. Throughout the story, there is a hint of a shadow looming over their perfect romance; I only wish that the potential source of the darkness could have been revealed earlier.
Despite the lack of clear direction, the story does include numerous intriguing secondary characters. The side stories of friends and family are entertaining and add depth to the plot; Kate and Robert’s romance is not the only one. Cocksure rock star Ian is a particularly hilarious character and any time he appears in a scene, things become decidedly more interesting. His relationship with Kim Johnson, the supermodel, would provide plenty of material for a wonderful spin-off.
With its drool-worthy hero and colorful cast of characters, You and I: The Kate and Robert Chronicles is a sexy romp written for fans of sensual erotic romance in mind.
