Pacific Book Review
When it comes to the way we live our lives, one of the most transformative experiences we as a people can have is that of a quest. Taking a quest means a journey of discovery, both for yourself and the world around you, which is why quests are so ingrained into the fiction works of authors. As Maya Angelou once said, “Our stories come from our lives and from the playwright’s pen, the mind of the actor, the roles we create, the artistry of life itself and the quest for peace.”
In author D.K. Lange’s Magecraft: Daynor, a group of adventurers from the Guild must go on an epic quest when rumors that the fabled prophecy is upon the land. Sent to another world entirely, they come across a young woman who is just discovering the secret to who her long lost mother was, and why she is destined to become a powerful force of nature – not just to her adoptive home, but everywhere.
Author D.K. Lange does a fantastic job of dropping the reader into the mythology and powerful worlds which are formed in this novel. The infusion of high fantasy is abounded in this book, the narrative bringing together everything from elves to warrior knights and powerful mages, all from other worlds which are able to be traversed through gateways. One unique thing is the difference in the characters as their cultures vary, showcasing the lack of knowledge in some areas for the protagonist, Daynor, and giving her a view of how different worlds work.
This is definitely a book for those who enjoy high fantasy reads, as the book is very detailed and unique in its approach to the fantasy genre. It is also a read meant for adults, as there are many complex situations that arise which are reminiscent of the storytelling in Game of Thrones. The growing relationship between Toren and Daynor is at the heart of these characters’ interactions, as they are thrust forward into their roles hesitantly and suffer many challenges. Yet they grow together and learn to find something within each other few ever have, connecting the reader to this mythology and narrative even more so.
A strong, unique and evenly paced read, author D.K. Lange’s Magecraft: Daynor is a one-of-a-kind read fantasy fans will not be able to get enough of. Action-packed, wide ranging in the reading audience, with magic and fantasy, the narrative really draws the readers in and keeps them invested throughout each and every chapter.
