Abraham Lincoln once said, “The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who’ll get me a book I ain’t read.” In author Orville Evjen’s book Lincoln, is the story of one of the United States most prolific and respected leaders revealing his life explored in a whole new light.
In this book, readers are given a visual look into the known and unknown aspects of Lincoln’s early life. After exploring his battle with melancholy and depression following the loss of so many loved ones along with his personal views of religion and morality, Lincoln’s life doing honest and heroic deeds while pursuing his education and dreams of becoming President of the United States are expanded visually throughout this graphic book.
This is an uniquely written book, as it presents itself in a graphic historic format, adding a visual aid to the story of Lincoln. Not only that, but the author chose to incorporate a supernatural theme to the story to represent the former President’s struggles with depression and his own religious beliefs, making this a truly creative and interesting choice for the story. Combining historical facts with creative notions that were inferred by the author, Lincoln’s struggles with his own mental health and its influence on his life are truly a sight to read and behold.
This is a book meant for anyone who enjoys history and in particular the story of Abraham Lincoln. As a history fan myself, it was thrilling to dive into the mind of Lincoln in his early years, from his childhood and struggle to learn while dealing with a father who abhorred education, to an adult life getting into politics, losing a true friend and struggling with his feelings overall.
This was a phenomenal book to read. While the story did incorporate and lean into a religious outlook heavily, the artwork was wonderful and the story was fast paced and gave the historical nature of ‘Honest Abe’ a whole new understanding. It was unique and interesting to see the author delve into the nature of mental health in that era and how it was dealt with, and the more supernatural elements of his struggle were a great way to illustrate his own internal battles going on; showing the man behind the legend.
