Paul Wonder is an adventure seeker with a natural curiosity qhich will soon lead him on an epic adventure. He believes anything is possible and his dog Magic is magical, always protecting him from harm. A trip to Scotland creates the opportunity to search for monster sightings, but Paul never expected to stumble upon a brewing battle between good and evil. Relying on help from family and new friends, Paul and Magic work to uncover the supernatural secrets surrounding Loch Ness.
The setting is an important aspect of the story with the secrets surrounding Paul derived from the location of Loch Ness. As the story opens, you’re greeted with Paul’s perspective of LA which makes the descriptions charming such as referring to fog or smog as June gloom and as a typical summer morning. The majority of the premise occurs around Loch Ness with supernatural elements creating a rich mythology surrounding this area. The beginning has subtle foreshadowing that hints at the adventure awaiting Paul, such as the book on monster sightings which once belonged to Paul’s mom. This sets up a connection to Loch Ness before they even arrive there. The story weaves a heartfelt undercurrent into the tone starting with the introduction of Paul who is first seen looking at a family album. This creates an immediate connection between Paul and his family, specifically the memory of his mother who he longs to be able to see. This also incorporates her into the mystery and allows you to get insight into her character even though it’s only through her presence.
Several characters are incorporated throughout, such as Paul’s best friends who he gets into trouble with and who are supportive of him about what he believes. Other friends he encounters become his allies in his investigations at Loch Ness, which adds a lightness to the mystery akin to classic YA sleuths and their friends. The story contains a strong familial connection that grounds Paul in reality. These various family members include his father who is more skeptical and his adventurous aunt who has interesting stories from her time as a detective. Each character adds to Paul’s experience of monster hunting with his father not really believing and his aunt helping drive the investigative quality. The connection to his mother creates a strong enough presence that makes her feel like another character. The most significant character is Magic who is a mystery in herself as she appeared in his room one day when she was a puppy and Paul is convinced she has the ability to glow. She is described as being the most important member of the family and is a presence that protects, supports, and ensures he feels safe at all times. The story perfectly captures the power a pet has in our lives.
The supernatural elements are woven throughout, introducing various creatures such as a mysterious black dog and a beast with fiery eyes. This epic adventure becomes a family trip as everyone becomes more and more on board to pursue these strange sightings. An interesting balance is struck between supernatural aspects and Biblical references such as Judas and his dog Goliath. Multiple references are made by the family – Bible study, Paul saying his prayers, Grandma praying, Aunt talking about the guidance of God, Paul going to a Christian school, and a conversation about good and evil in the world.
Magic and the Terror at Loch Ness blends folklore, supernatural, and religious elements for a coming-of-age journey that takes you into Scotland for a magical adventure with an adorable dog named Magic.
