Meditations on the Rosary is a sprawling and comprehensive look at the history of the rosary in the Catholic Church and other religious rituals. Sandra Enders has written a book that will enlighten readers.

Meditations on the Rosary starts with the history of the rosary, the set of prayers recited with rosary beads. Author Sandra Enders writes about the history of the prayer from the ancient Dominican order to the Middle Ages. She also writes about the late Pope John Paul II dedicating a year to the rosary as well. She has an example of the rosary in the end of the prayer, the Salve Regina: “Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.”  In addition to writing about rosaries, she writes about different types of mysteries in the Bible, like the birth of Jesus, The Three Wise Men finding Jesus, and Jesus’ resurrection.

Enders also shares Psalms from the Bible that can comfort readers when writing about sorrowful mysteries in the Bible like Psalm 143: “Hasten to answer me, Lord;/for my spirit fails me/Do not hide your face from me/lest I become like those descending to the pit./In the morning let me hear of your mercy,/for in you I trust.”  She also writes about glorious mysteries and joyous occasions, like Psalm 103: “Bless the Lord/all his creatures everywhere in his domain/Bless the Lord, my soul!” In addition to the explanation of the rosary and Bible verses, Enders also pairs the historical accounts with meditations readers can recite and calming activities in each chapter.

Meditations on the Rosary is an informative and well-researched book. Enders writes about the mysteries and miracles of the Bible with themes in each chapter that show that demonstrate many themes like devotion and forgiveness. The book also has beautiful illustrations which give more depth to the text. Enders’ writing is a mixture of academic research of the Bible and spiritual practices that will center the reader.

Meditations on the Rosary would be best for people who want to learn more about the Bible and the rosary. The book would be good for any reader who want to be more spiritually connected through meditation. Meditations on the Rosary would also be a good text for readers who want to learn more about the history of the rosary and the importance of prayer and meditation. Enders has written a book that readers engage and inform readers.
