Life was once ordinary for Mark between his marriage and his unique ability to communicate telepathically. Now he’s separated and living someplace new where he meets the lovely stockbroker Lauren. It doesn’t take long for Mark to fall head over heels, but it takes even less time for the relationship to turn upside down. The two share more in common than their jobs as both have the ability of telepathy and both struggle with a drinking problem. Their relationship quickly erupts under tension and arguments which results in job loss, a stint in prison, and a tenuous relationship between them. Mark attempts to get his life back on track with AA meetings and works to rebuild his relationship with Lauren.

The story weaves through first-person diary entries which are told from Mark’s perspective with each entry written for Lauren. The diary entries are at the focal point of Mark’s story which explores his relationship and feelings for Lauren by showing events from his perspective. The tone of the entries is reflective as they delve into Mark’s life through his struggles and his relationship progression which goes from a passionate romance to a hot mess with arguments, a restraining order, and even jail time. The connection between them is immediate as Mark sees a similar soul to his own, through more than their shared jobs as stockbrokers, yet through their shared abilities and their problems with drinking. The diary weaves through their relationship starting with the heated argument that made everything fall apart and delving through every moment which followed. Mark’s struggle is an emotional journey as he faces his drinking, problems in his marriage and relationship, and his descent into depression.

Author David C. Fitch delves deep into Mark’s life using genuine and emotional details to explore Mark’s depression and his attempt to get his life back together. Though the story focuses on Mark’s personal life, it delves into other topics throughout which includes a mystery that shakes Mark to his core and creates a surprising twist. Also woven throughout is the relationship between Mark and his son which is another layer to his character as his son is living with his grandma and in need of a heart transplant. This adds to the emotional core in Mark’s journey for self-betterment as he becomes desperate for a way to save his son. The strain of his relationships is a vital part of his character growth as he works to save his son, repair the estrangement with his ex-wife, and the complex dynamic he has with Lauren. As the story progresses, Mark begins experiencing odd dreams which are used as a way to explore more of his telepathy. His telepathy is a grounded part of his character and is a natural inclusion within the world which is seen vividly thanks to the use of diary entries.

The story is set during the 1990s which gives the story a gritty tone which fits well with Mark’s struggles, providing the backdrop to Mark’s drinking problems, telepathy, and relationship tensions. Other characters are met throughout with the main ones focused upon being Lauren, his ex-wife, and a few friends that he encounters. Mark’s life is one that is up and down as his marriage ends only for him to meet Lauren who changes everything he thinks about love and passion, only for that relationship to erupt as well. Mental Telepathy Affair Diary is an exploration of growth and well-being through the diary entries that explores telepathy, relationship drama, and depression. Fitch’s writing style is perfect for the genre and pacing of the novel. This book has prose that is light and easy to read, yet filled with deeper meanings and significance for the audience to perceive. I highly recommend Mental Telepathy Affair Diary or Tides of Fate by David C. Fitch to fans of romantic suspense.
