Religion is a major aspect of most people’s lives in the world. One religion in particular that has been a major force for billions of people for years has to be Catholicism. As Brion Eno once said, “If you grow up in a very strong religion like Catholicism you certainly cultivate in yourself a certain taste for the intensity of ideas.” In author Peter Mazurek’s book Modern Catholic Concerns, a devout Catholic delves into the question of God’s existence and the arguments for and against the religion itself from a believer’s standpoint.

In this book, the author covers a wide range of topics that fall under the umbrella of Catholicism as a whole. Exploring the way modern media and other differing religions and viewpoints can affect a Catholic person’s stance on their own religion, the author delves into subjects both in a theological sense and in a more practical sense, from biblical passages and the evidence it presents to the subjects of terrorism, cults, sex abuse cases and so much more.

What makes this book so unique is that it is not written by someone who works within the Catholic Church themselves, but rather is written by someone who is an average believer who has grown up and lived life as a Catholic individual. It gives the historical and biblical context of the subject matter a more personal and individualism feel to the content being presented.

This is a book written for those who are devout Catholics, have been raised in the Catholic Church and/or is questioning their faith overall. It was fascinating to see the historical context of the subject matter the author delved into and it gives non-religious readers a unique perspective of the author’s viewpoints, which is in essence a viewpoint of the Catholic Church’s religion overall. For anyone not part of the church it will give some great insight into the religion, while those who are Catholic will find great personal knowledge and experience within the religion and will solidify one’s beliefs as they read the author’s journey through a biblical and historical context.

From examining specific events and items such as the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls to the Catholic Church itself and its purpose, author Peter Mazurek’s book Modern Catholic Concerns is a refreshing, personal and honest read for modern day Catholics who are interested in the history of their church or who are questioning their faith and need an honest approach to the subject. Those who aren’t religious will be fascinated with the long history and biblical references used throughout this very detailed read, and the long-paced book is vastly detailed and makes for a thorough read.
