Dale Evans once said, “Life is not over because you have diabetes. Make the most of what you have, be grateful.” While the sentiment is true, making it so is not always easy. The life of any one person living with diabetes is unique to the individual and filled with trials and tribulations not everyone can fathom. In author Celeste Barnard’s novel My Life as a Diabetic the experiences of one person living with the disease takes center stage.
The book focuses on the personal struggle and journey of the author’s life with Diabetes. From being diagnosed and struggling with the disease in different countries around the world, to the impact it has on the author’s family and how the author’s childhood and the lack of awareness sugar has on the body back in the day have impacted their life.
The author does a marvelous job conveying the struggle with the disease. Mixing her own personal stories of her experience with diabetes with statistical facts, the author both entertains, informs and educates the reader on all things regarding diabetes. The refreshing thing about My Life as a Diabetic is the fact that the author didn’t present the book as an expert telling everyone with diabetes how to live, but rather conveyed her own life experiences alongside the facts that are known about the illness.
This is definitely a book meant for anyone living with the disease known as diabetes, or for anyone who has family, friends or loved ones who struggle with it. As someone who has a family history of diabetes, it was both intriguing and educational to get a first-hand account of the way this illness impacts people on a personal level, not just from a physician’s point of view, but also as a layperson’s.
Overall this is a fantastic read that anyone interested in learning more about diabetes from someone who actually suffers from it must read. It’s heartfelt, personal and brings the disease into a whole new light. Diabetes is not something to be taken lightly, but it is unique to each individual, and this author does a marvelous job of bringing the struggle and journey to life in this powerful educational book. It is a great book to share with those afflicted with the disease, and for their family and supporters.
