In today’s world, one of the hardest concepts to grasp is treating your fellow man the way you would want to be treated in kind. The idea, whether it stems from a deeply held religious belief or a simple moral stand for what’s right and what’s wrong, is one which has been taught to people across all cultures; and yet in our modern world, politics, religion, and social differences have divided people so greatly that it is impossible to recognize the good in people or their behavior.
In author Tracy Emerick, Ph.D.’s Nifty Neighbors: Mister Rogers and Jesus Christ, the author goes on a spiritual and moral quest to explore the lives of two individuals whose teachings and actions have inspired others greatly to be their best selves over the years. Studying the life and teachings of both Jesus Christ, the pivotal figure in the Christian faith and son of God, with the teachings of Mister Rogers, the popular television personality who inspired millions through his program, books, and speaking to be their best selves by seeing the good in everyone and encouraging that good to come forth, the author hopes to prove by shedding the pessimism and negativity in our lives and treating those who we may differ with on certain issues with love and respect, the world may become a brighter place.
The author did a wonderful job of capturing a voice through her writing which allowed the sincerity and eagerness of the book’s message to come through clearly. The fast-pace of the book allowed the author to hone in on the key teachings of each figure, and put their message to use. Being able to discern things such as what a neighbor truly is, not only in distance but in terms of behavior, and how each figure exuded this sentiment through their teachings and actions, make the book feel engaging and informative all at the same time.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy non-fiction books, especially those who enjoy books which include religion and spirituality, morality, philosophy, and the core of what it means to be human. The mindful and heartfelt approach to the subject matter the author brought to her writing and the artistry of the writing style altogether allows the readers to fully get lost in the book, and creates a memorable and joyful reading experience which is sure to inspire many to embrace this philosophy.
Captivating, heartfelt, and engaging, author Tracy Emerick, Ph.D.’s Nifty Neighbors: Mister Rogers and Jesus Christ is a must-read non-fiction and religious book for anyone looking to find that perfect balance between faith and philosophy. The core of morality and the different paths to getting there are great ideas that drive the human spirit forward in a positive way; something the world can use more of in this day and age.
