In Oh, Susannah by Ruth Callick, we are introduced to Abner Brockman, or simply Brock, and his friend Cade Candlewood. Brock is in the hospital and his friend has come to pay him a visit. In their conversation, Cade presumes that Marlett was responsible for Brock’s injuries but Brock stops his friend from completing the sentence, and hands him a note that he had woken up with. The content of the note made me realize that I was in for a treat when reading the book. The note suggested that Brock was in hospital as payback for killing the sender’s friend. In a spiteful manner, the author of the note expressed his satisfaction that Brock’s friend did not survive the car blow-up that had him in the hospital. The sender of the note was avenging his personal friend’s death who, apparently had been killed by Brockman. It was tit for tat.

After reading that part of the book, the eagerness to read more crept in me. The mystery of the note and the sender made the reading amusing, as I wanted to know what happened next. One style the author used that I loved was the use of dialogue. Throughout the chapters, characters are seen to converse and this makes the reading better as you can picture the character, and read the tone of their conversation. The language used in the book is friendly to learners of all levels and can be understood by anyone who has the basic knowledge of the English language.

Oh, Susannah is packed with action, adventure, mystery and a very clear narration. Ruth Callick’s style of using vivid descriptions on both the characters and events in the book had me enjoy every paragraph. I loved the relationship Becky, Gloria and Susannah had, and how each of them played their role perfectly. I must commend the author as she excellently brought out the feminine bond the three had, and how each of the characters were important in the book. I loved reading about the history between Susannah Brockman and Cade Candlewood. That was a great twist I never expected.

If you are a fan of fiction stories that are full of suspense and adventure, then don’t hesitate to look for Oh, Susannah. The reading experience is an absolute joy, as you meet interesting characters up till the last chapter. It is exciting and super easy to follow the storyline. I fell in love with the main character as she seemed bold from the beginning. Her connection to the car blow up mentioned in the first chapter was thrilling.

I have to mention that I like the brevity of the chapters. The author gave the reader an easy time when reading, as it’s easy to complete a chapter. This also enables one to have the urge of reading more. Reading this book will have the “one more” effect on you. I had to read more once I had started the first chapter as the reading experience was pleasing.
