As an avid reader and horror aficionado, it can be difficult to find a wonderfully written and expertly detailed horror work of fiction; one that leaves you breathless and makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Needless to say, I can be picky about finding the next great horror novel or novella. But I feel that I may have done just that after reading this story. So come one, come all horror fiction fans because boy, do I have the book for you. Old Gooseberry by Kurse Illionaire is an action-packed and frightening tale with a fictional world built to terrify and thrill its audience. The mythology behind the horror tale woven by the author is so incredibly detailed you will feel fully immersed in this disturbing world.
It isn’t often that a fictional horror story truly gives me the chills, but this story certainly did that — more than once. In this story, we meet the children of Tophet and Gypsy Pure Picaro. These children are named Cozen, Skeezicks, and Apollyon and it is their ultimate rebellion that will come down on their world with a crushing blow that nobody is destined to survive. Their mother
knows this is coming before the birth of her third child and warns the father, Tophet, to do whatever he can to prepare for this fateful day where he will have to fight his own children.
If their rebellion is left unchecked, they will release a flood of mass destruction onto their world with reckless abandon. The origins of their seemingly psychotic tendencies unravel as the story goes on which will leave the readers simultaneously terrified and intrigued as they continuously turn to the pages, needing to know what will happen next and more importantly, how it will end. Any good horror book will leave you thinking about it long after you’ve read the last line and that is exactly how I felt after diving into this world created by the author.
Old Gooseberry by Kurse Illionaire is a multi-faceted novella with a spine-chilling tone you will not want to miss. And while I wouldn’t recommend this book to the easily squeamish individual, it is an incredible tale for those who enjoy a little adventure with their expertly written horror stories. Just maybe don’t read it right before bed, unless nightmares are your thing.
