Jerrie Dean Blade’s first book Open Your Heart and Let the Lord Come In is a devotional style book that has inspiring stories and short tales of encouragement from her own life and experience. She uses ordinary household items to implore readers to re-examine their soul “houses.” She sets up the devotional by introducing Jesus Christ as the main character of the story. As the book progresses she looks at common messes that can be found in everyone’s homes. Boxes, irons, cracks, and clocks help the reader along a journey of self-reflection.
In the beginning of the book are a collection of testimonials, I especially enjoyed reading the testimonial from Jerrie’s little brother. It is always marvelous to connect with a book through the eyes of their family. The author starts to take shape in the way that their sister, mother, or brother sees them. The chapter of the book titled “Who is Jesus,” was very detailed; however, Jerrie could have elaborated and explain many of the characteristics that she lists as part of his identity. I felt as if some of the Bible verses listed as descriptions could leave the reader confused from her metaphor without more details. However, the concept is noble, and it makes sense why many of the testimonials would want to read this over again.
The devotional aspect was excellent and done in a simple way to provide more attention to content rather than style. I was engaged with Jerrie’s life and her dedication to finding a new way of occupying her time. The way the author scripted this book makes it very relatable for anyone looking for spiritual guidance. Readers who would like to get back into studying the Bible will also appreciate Blade’s writing. I feel like it rekindled a spark of interest in me to continue to explore more. I think most readers will relate to this. If readers are looking for a quick inspiring Christian book I would recommend that they read Open Your Heart and Let the Lord Come In.
