In our current world as we know it, there is no escaping the large political, social, and philosophical divides which exist in our society. The United States is a prime example of this, as right- and left-wing politics become more and more fractured, and once socially unacceptable and harmful groups find a home within these fractures, working to further their harmful agendas while dividing families in ways not seen since the Civil War.
Trying to understand these divides and how it can impact our society is something we all try to do in our own ways, and for some, this comes in the form of dystopian storytelling. Looking ahead to what could be and how the impact of certain situations, from climate change to political divides, can affect how we move forward as a people is one of the more profound aspects of this genre.
In author Richard C. Deason’s Pacifica, the author explores the dystopian genre in a unique way through the story of a small family. Years after disappearing into parts unknown to pursue a dream, a young man is labeled a terrorist and dissident by the governments of Texas and East America. When mobs and riots begin to affect the family he had left behind, the young man helps bring his family to the place he calls home, Pacifica. Learning their son had helped form a dystopian society outside of the fracturing countries and nation-states in the former United States, a technological advanced society now faces destruction at the hands of the East America’s powerful military forces. Now, this philosophical and scientifically driven society must fight to protect themselves and all they have built before they become another dead society in a crumbling world.
The author did an incredible job of creating a rich and captivating story. The first thing which stood out to me was the amount of world-building the author did. The natural way the author was able to infuse such depth of emotion and character development into a creative and thoughtful new vision of what our world could end up like was amazing to read, and the thoughtful approach to philosophical discussions on society and how it should function really added a level of depth to the equal amount of action and sci-fi wonders included.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy dystopian sci-fi novels, especially those that hone in on elements of action and adventure, family dynamics, and suspense reads. The attention to detail the author pays in developing this world and the equal amount of attention shown to this world-building element with the character dynamics and thematic storytelling make this a truly one-of-a kind read.
Harrowing, captivating, and entertaining, author Richard C. Deason’s Pacifica is a must- read dystopian sci-fi novel you won’t be able to put down. The richness of the world the author has built and the twists and turns in the narrative will have reader’s adrenaline pumping, and the nail-biter final chapters will have fans eager for more of this amazing author’s work.
