The lessons children are taught and the impact a child’s mentor or hero has on their development are so important to understand as a civilization. The events of our childhood, whether it be good or bad, not only stay with us long after they occur, but are indicative of how a child is going to grow up to be an adult in this world. Far too often these children are neglected or forgotten, and it has never been more important to create a safe and nurturing space to help teach these children the lessons they’ll need in life.
In author and Dr. Clifton Hunt’s Protector of the Innocent, the author shares a personal story of his own childhood in order to showcase the lessons he learned and the guidance, to help other children not only of different ethnicities but of various forms of traumatic experiences as well. The author in particular hones in on the assumptions that so many people make about African American boys and other boys of color, and the impact those assumptions can have on a young man’s mind and emotional state altogether.
The author did an incredible job of crafting a book which spoke not only to the educators and leaders of the world, but the young people who have experienced the trauma the author has indicated in his own words throughout this book. The honesty and depth of emotional wellbeing the author pours into every chapter of this book, and the heartfelt atmosphere the author crafts for the reader really speaks to the authenticity and the heartbreaking realities so many young people, especially young people of color, have to deal with on an everyday basis.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy non-fiction reads, especially those which delve into matters of faith, hope, and of mentorship. The fresh take on such an important topic and the emotional roller coaster the reader is put on, allows the author’s story to shine through perfectly, and the book itself found a balance of non-fiction guidance with soft, heartfelt and emotional storytelling from the author himself.
Thoughtful, engaging, and memorable, author and Dr. Clifton Hunt’s Protector of the Innocent is a must-read non-fiction book readers won’t be able to put down. The importance of the social issues which these young men of color face growing up in the system that pushes them to their limits day in and day out, as well as the emotional story of the author’s own childhood and how it relates to these young men’s struggles, made this a truly compelling read.
