Random Acts of Writing is not your typical book. From page one of the introduction author Mark J. Molldrem lets readers know that the reading experience they’re about to have will be different from others; this isn’t a novel with a plot that takes you from point A to Z, nor is it a typical self-help book that reads very matter-of-factly. Random Acts of Writing is a more of a collection of reflections, facts, and questions to get the reader thinking about his or her own life and how he or she can apply what they’re reading to make a positive change.
Molldrem divides each of the sections by month and within each month it’s further divided into four parts, or week-by-week, which is helpful in giving a guide as to how to read the book. He advises that you don’t have to read the whole book in one sitting but could read chunks here or there throughout the year.
Each chapter or month has digestible musings and anecdotes about subjects ranging from love to finance to aging. The topics are usually centered on the holidays or events associated with each month, which allows readers a good way to reflect on the spirit of the month they’re in while reading the book. One fun bit Molldrem includes in this book is that in the beginning of each month he gives a history of how the month was named, which gives insight on why we associate months with certain things.
Random Acts of Writing is a unique reading experience that offers readers an opportunity to open their minds, reflect, and apply Molldrem’s thought-provoking questions to their own lives. It’s a great book for anyone who wants to expand his or her horizons and get out of a rut.
