One consistent aspect of life throughout the centuries has sadly been the case of fraud. There have always been those who seeks to scam or con their way into people’s lives for their money, power or influence. This has only gotten worse over time as technology has advanced, and the scams have gotten more complex in the age of the Internet. As Alan Greenspan once said, “Corruption, embezzlement, fraud, these are all characteristics which exist everywhere. It is regrettably the way human nature functions, whether we like it or not. What successful economies do is keep it to a minimum. No one has ever eliminated all of that stuff.”
In author Garrett Sutton, ESQ.’s Scam-Proof Your Assets: Guarding Against Widespread Deception, the author takes readers on a detailed guide through identifying and preventing scams from affecting you and your families. Teaching readers the patterns they will need to be able to spot in order to prevent would-be criminals from scamming you out of your money and identity, the author showcases the need for privacy, protection and information to stop these modern-day threats to us both individually and within business as well.
This is a fantastic, well-written and expertly researched book. The author showcases a wide array of examples of scams so many people have fallen victim to over the years, and how to recognize these scams for what they are. Examining a pattern of behavior that includes charm, manipulation, greed and fear of the unknown, the author is able to show readers how modern criminals will utilize these patterns to prey on their victims, and how readers can prevent themselves from becoming their next target. From modern-day email scams to historically accurate con-men, this books helps readers to fully understand the development of fraudulent activity and how to be best prepared.
The book is the perfect book for those who enjoy non-fiction reads, in particular those who enjoy how-to guides and anything involving personal finances. For me personally I was immediately drawn to the historical chapters involving real-life con artists like Frank Abagnale, (most famous from being portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio in Catch Me If You Can), and how he turned his criminal career into a legitimate business to help catch scams such as the ones he crafted.
Insightful, well-written and evenly paced, author Garrett Sutton’s Scam-Proof Your Assets is a must read book for those tasked to protect their personal finance, as well as those who wish to learn about this growing problem. The author has clearly demonstrated a thoughtful approach to the topic as well as a deep-seated knowledge from years of experience in the world of finance, giving this book the authenticity readers crave when seeking out guided books. In a world filled with more mis-information than ever before, this is one non-fiction read on personal finance you won’t want to miss!
