Kid is the typical rock-star hopeful, not wanting to settle down for anyone or anything except for his music. Everything changes for Kid when he meets the eccentric Scar, who helps redefine his thoughts and ideas about love and life. Their bond continues to grow as they navigate and experience life’s ups-and-downs together, building the life they’ve always dreamed. Nothing could go wrong, right?
Readers are introduced to Cash, or rather Kid, before the novel begins. While this is a story told by Kid, it is about how he believes Scar saved his life. Nunes wonderfully crafts a story where the readers will utter “wow” just after the first chapter. Because this
is a fast and easy read, capable of being read in one sitting, don’t think it is going to be a light and fluffy one. With sentences like this: “Each day—any day—there are certain moments in your life that are lifesavers or molds that shape the rest of your life,” readers are presented with tender, profoundly poignant prose which not only entertains but also evokes intense emotions, possibly bringing readers to tears.
Readers will notice instantly how the author uses dialogue and inner thought to shape and enhance the storytelling process. Scar Kid provides characters which are well thought out, and filled with personality. It is notable to see the author put such emphasis on getting the readers to feel the emotions of his narration as he tells the tale. The novel carries a quality of having an exclusive window to the relationship of Scar and Kid, as it develops from their first meeting. The amazing thing about this book is Nunes’ ability to make Kid’s emotions simply radiate, to hover right off the page.
Scar Kid: Invincibility Redefined is a tale which seems cliché, but is rooted in intense emotional connection – not only between the characters, but also between author and audience. Anyone who enjoys a good fiction novel will be moved by R. L. Nunes’ novel. Scar Kid deserves accolades and quickly becomes a must-read.
