Far too many times in life there are successful, beautiful, and wonderfully warm and gentle women who unfortunately settle and end up with a man who is not only completely unsuited for them but will likely wear them down mentally in ways they never imagined. That is one of the main themes explored in this powerful novel, Settling (A Novel) by author Andrea J. King.
Exploring a tumultuous relationship between Candace Mason — who is a wildly successful civil engineer known for her loving and compassionate nature, her talent as a singer, and who also is a minister of music at her church — and Trey Wilson, who is sadly the antithesis of everything Candace represents. He is manipulative and completely irresponsible and shows narcissistic and sociopathic qualities and somehow, this vibrant woman ended up married to him. This is hardly the first time this has happened within a relationship, but it never ceases to amaze those who are on the outside looking in to see the light dimming on such a beautiful soul like Candace’s.
Told in a humorous yet passionate narration by the author, we see that Candace only ended up with Trey after an unexpected pregnancy occurred. And over the years, as time and time again Trey disappoints her, the audience must wait with bated breath for her to finally make a change and step out from under his thumb. For her to truly see her self-worth and to leave him once and for all…only for her to unfortunately stay with the man bringing her down each and every day. It feels as though you are right there in the unsettling marriage with her as the author has a sharp wit and excellent way of helping the reader root for Candace to get out of a dead-end and depressing relationship so she can finally shine the way she was always meant to.
This read is fast-paced with humor all throughout and will leave you on the edge of your seat seeing what the eventual outcome will be for our heroine. It also touches on what it is like for a dark-skinned, Black young woman to go through rejection and how that shapes who she is as a person later in life. You will constantly be cheering her on and the ending will be well worth the wait. Don’t sleep on this one. Make sure to pick up your copy of Settling (A Novel) by Andrea J. King today!
