Over the last decade, the question of what the government’s role in the everyday life of an American citizen has become a central arguing point amongst voters. No matter what side of the aisle a person identifies with, one basic understanding that all Americans share is the right to live freely, and yet defining what freedom really means is the sticking point in which everyone begins arguing with one another.
While some people take these issues lightly, author Archie Richards’s Shrink Government: It’s Too Big! delves deeper into the issue and examines what the government’s role should be. Examining the impact the government has on personal wealth, taxes, and public crises as well, this book examines how much power the government should have and what role they should play in the country overall.
The author does an incredible job of crafting a clear cut and easy to understand thesis regarding the government’s role in the United States. Expanding on terminology found within the Constitution, the author showcases how big government has allowed itself to grow bigger than originally intended in the Constitution, and in doing so has allowed itself to create higher taxes for the citizens of the country and more control overall. The personable way the author writes and the research which was done to build up the author’s assertions showcases a passion and depth of knowledge for this subject matter. The thing which stands out about this book is not only does the author provide an analysis of the problem, but provides solutions as well, such as transferring things such as gold reserves and national park resources away from the government and into the hands of private organizations instead.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy non-fiction books, especially those which expand upon government policies and social sciences. The way the author was able to research and lean on historical events and today’s occurring news cycle to help exemplify the points the author was making allows the readers to really think critically about how the government impacts a person’s everyday life, and how much control the citizens of this nation have on allowing the government to retain this control.
