The one area of the world that is always looking for an edge over the competition is business. Trying to find that one thing that will lead to a person’s success in business is the major driving force of the entrepreneur overall. As Jack Welch once said, “An organization’s ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.” In author Dr. Damian C. Dunbar’s book Strategies Used by Small Business Leaders to Obtain Government Contracts and Subcontracts, the reader is given an in-depth study of small businesses and their success with government contracts.
This book details a very specific area of study, as it serves more as a study done in the backdrop of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Looking into small businesses in this area and in particular small business leaders, (SBLs), used strategies to obtain US government subcontract awards and used these awards to keep their businesses sustainable in the economy.
This book is written in a detail oriented, precise and organized way. Breaking down the study of these 5 SBLs made the information clear cut and easy to follow, and created a narrative which was very much straight to the point, which is an important voice to find within the writing of a book involving business and business practices. It was great to see the author go – point by point – in each study and break down the data analysis, especially in the section detailing reliability and validity to the companies and their work.
This is definitely a book for anyone who enjoys business, business techniques, government contract work and nonfiction reads in general that are detail oriented. The book definitely gives the average reader an in-depth look into how much work and detail goes into the study of small businesses, giving a clearer understanding of how important they are to the local economy of any given area and the importance of the work they do.
This was a great book which perfectly captured the tone and authority needed to guide the reader through a detailed study such as this one. It is the perfect read for anyone looking to delve not only into the small business world in general but those who specifically want to see what kind of work goes into the world of government contracts and the edge they will need in order to succeed.
