Book Review
The mysterious Holy Ghost Writer has heeded the call of longing fans with The Count of Monte Cristo and has continued the tale of Edmond Dantes in The Sultan of Monte Cristo. In Holy Ghost Writer’s book, readers will finally get the answers to questions asked so long ago. Did Dantes and Haydee stay together? Did Mercedes ever love again? Did Villefort ever learn the truth about his past deeds? All of these characters return to tell their story and are accompanied by exciting new characters as well. Edmond Dantes has always been able to attract colorful characters into his life. His latest adventure will bring him into the abode, and possibly the boudoir, of the Arabian beauty, Raymee, who longs for freedom and passion and has heard tales of the Count of Monte Cristo’s deeds and longs to be another of his treasures. The Sultan of Monte Cristo is a thrilling story that will take readers around the world to vibrant landscapes. Readers will watch as Dantes woos exotic women, charms diplomats, and battles dangerous pirates armed only with his sharp mind. This book is everything fans have asked for and a few things that they never even thought to consider.Who is this Holy Ghost Writer? Perhaps he is a descendant of Alexandre Dumas channeling the spirit of his ancestor; or, perhaps he is the great author himself reincarnated. Neither of these would be hard to believe after reading this book. Whoever he is, one thing is for certain, Holy Ghost Writer has successfully recreated Dumas’s famous hero. All of Edmond Dantes’ wit, wisdom, and mischief are present in this clever tale. Dantes, master of disguise and fulfiller of justice, has returned and is sure to please old fans and new readers alike.
It has been a great joy to return to Holy Ghost Writer’s writing after reading and reviewing his first book in this collection, The Count of Monte Cristo as Retold by Sherlock Holmes. While I praised the previous book for being a wonderful retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo and for being a much more approachable tale than other denser translations of the original work, I criticized it for not being a uniquely new tale. I honestly cannot make this same complaint about The Sultan of Monte Cristo. While Holy Ghost Writer has remained true to the original story and characters Alexander Dumas created, this book is surprisingly unique and fresh. There are plenty of surprises for readers to encounter, but it still feels like coming home to an already established literary world. This is a truly amazing blend of writing that Holy Ghost Writer has succeeded in doing.
The Sultan of Monte Cristo is a quick and fascinating read that fulfills the fantasies so many readers have longed for after turning the last page of The Count of Monte Cristo. I highly recommend Holy Ghost Writer’s book, but with a warning: Once you read this first book there is no going back; you are going to want to read the next. I can’t wait to read the next installment, The Sovereign Order of Monte Cristo, and see what new adventures await.
