One thing which connects many people in this world is a passion for animal conservation. Whether it comes in a local form of adopting pet dogs or cats to give a home and love to, or even larger conservation efforts to protect endangered species from poachers and hunters alike, the desire to protect and preserve these precious creatures from the dangers of our world, especially those that are man-made, is something that keeps people connected to the world as a whole. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
In author Nancy LeBaron-Kiley’s Tails of A Lady Dog Catcher, the author takes readers on a short yet poignant journey into their life as the first female Dog Catcher and wildlife law enforcement officer in the United States. Through short yet powerful stories, the author relates the events and special memories that comprised her life starting at the young age of 19, while also encouraging readers to take the time to pursue this career if they have a passion for it.
The author did an incredible job of crafting a unique non-fiction memoir read on animals, and the history of animal control within the United States in such a short book. The personable and honest way in which the author wrote really did an incredible job of crafting a relatable narrative, while also giving a unique perspective few other people have into this world. The history that the author’s life made and the heart in which the author wrote the story kept me invested throughout this short read.
This is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys non-fiction stories, especially those that fall more into a short story or novella format, and include a beautiful blend of memoir storytelling and animal behaviors and lessons learned over time. As someone with a passion for animals and a deep love for the efforts to conserve and preserve the animal kingdom as a whole, I found the author’s stories to be quite powerful and moving. The personal stories reflected the small-town life the author came from in this point in time while also delving into the history of animal control in a truly unique way.
Thoughtful, fast-paced, and engaging, author Nancy LeBaron-Kiley’s Tails of A Lady Dog Catcher is a must-read non-fiction memoir, full of animal humor. The witty style of writing and engaging story of the author’s life as an animal advocate and law enforcement officer was an incredibly rich and original storytelling adventure that will keep readers invested throughout its entirety.
