Everyone loves a good mystery which leaves you titillated and gets your heart racing, wanting to know what is going to happen as you turn each page, getting closer and closer to the end. You will feel that and so much more when you begin the journey into a town called Jerridale where rumors are swirling of what lives underneath the town, in the sewers, which the locals refer to as “the belly crawlers.” Author Farah Velez has a fresh take on the creatures that go bump in the night in her novella The Belly Crawlers and I could not have enjoyed going along for the ride more.

The author starts out this mysterious tale — with just the right amount of horror elements — by meeting a young girl named Fern, whose father disappeared sometime before and hasn’t been seen since. She lives with her mother alone now and has not given up hope that she will find her father, somehow, some way. She begins to hear of the rumors about the belly crawlers in town and how you should never pass the factory past midnight or they will snatch you up and turn you into one of them. There are many rumors, though, surrounding their intentions and what it is they do to those they take, including that they are feasting on human flesh, but what really occurs down there, no one truly knows.

Fern is intrigued by this thought that maybe her father was taken by these so-called belly crawlers and begins an investigation of her own, though she is putting herself into dangerous situations to do so which no young girl likely should. In this harrowing adventure she finds herself in is not one she does on her own, either, now that she has a new friend in a local named Eve. The two go on a search and what they end up finding in the sewers takes the entire story in a whole new direction.

This novella has all of the classic aspects to a great thriller and suspense story we could all hope for. Readers will be eagerly turning the pages, wanting to know just what is going on in this town underground and the truth about the belly crawlers. And once you find out…there’s no turning back. If you’re looking for a quick yet incredibly fun and well-written mystery book to immerse yourself in on a lazy Sunday afternoon, this would be absolutely perfect for you.
