Marie Curie once said, “If I see anything vital around me, it is precisely that spirit of adventure, which seems indestructible and is akin to curiosity.” In author Armanis Ar-Feinial’s novel The Covenant of Unverdus or The Green Forest Turned Black: The Fallen, readers are taken on a larger than life journey which puts the fate of a massive fantasy world into the hands of a few, as threats both old and new rise to destroy all life in the world.
The story follows Kac and a group of others on an adventure deep into the forests of Kinasa to the Temple of Corela, where he must discover how to serve the God of the Universe, Unverdus. Yet the journey is not only perilous, but escaping the civil war brewing around them will make things difficult as Kac and the others discover what they must do to stop an ancient enemy from rising up and destroying everything they hold dear.
The author has done a masterful job of world building in this fantasy driven narrative. The imagination and vision of a J.RR. Tolkien novel mixed with the gritty realism of a George R.R. Martin novel is what shines through in this book, as a world filled with dwarves, elves, orcs, sorcerers and prophets, guilds and masters and warring factions makes this a truly marvelous example of the fantasy driven genre.
Anyone who is a fan of the fantasy genre will absolutely become enthralled with this novel. As a fan of the creativity and vision of the genre myself, I was easily captivated as readers are driven into the heart of this fantasy world the author has created. The light versus darkness theme that often plays out in the fantasy genre showcases the narrow line many characters often walk between both worlds in this book, as good men and women find their very souls corrupted by the darkness plaguing this land, and only a select few have the willpower to fight a losing battle in the hopes that they can overcome this great evil.
Overall this was a wonderfully written book fantasy fans will thoroughly enjoy. The only thing some readers may notice is that the writing tends to jump back and forth a bit between past and present tense, but it wasn’t something that ever took me, as a reader, out of the story. While the book does appear to reside in an established world, I found myself easily able to navigate the intricate world the author had built, and by the book’s end, the readers will be on the edge of their seat as a major cliffhanger leaves room for another book in this growing series to be released.
