One of the most important things any employee is taught from the beginning of their work history is in customer service, the customer is always right. As American restaurateur Danny Meyer once said, “The most important thing you can do is make the distinction between customer service and guest hospitality. You need both things to thrive, but they are completely different.” In author E.V. Rose’s book The Customer Is an A**Hole: Spilling the Tea on the Reality of Customer Behavior, the author flips the script to reveal why the customer isn’t always right.
In this book, the author explores the many facets which go into customer service, in regards to the customer themselves. From the various types of customers one may deal with the things a customer will do wrong and how negative and unfair reviews break down the trust established between a customer and the business they attend. It also showcases the customers who do things the right way; and how a middle ground can be established between the customer and an employee.
The book is written with passion and experience, showing off the author’s voice which commands the readers’ attention. The author comes to the subject as a business owner whose negative experience with customers cost her a dream, and in doing so drove her to write down the negativity which comes with a lack of consideration or morals from customers in this modern age of social media.
This is a book written for those who enjoy non-fiction reads, books on customer service or books involving business in general. It was truly fascinating to see the topic of customer service explored from such an unheard perspective. So many stories of bad customer service exist out there, it is great to see that the topic is not quite as one side as is often presented to people in our modern world.
A brilliant non-fiction read that is quick and fast-paced, author E.V. Rose has created a one of a kind read that everyone should pick up with The Customer Is an A**Hole: Spilling the Tea on the Reality of Customer Behavior. It will give many readers something to ponder as they think about their own behavior in a customer service setting, and highlight the need for mutual trust and understanding between customer and server.
