Marion Zimmer Bradley once said, “Science Fiction encourages us to explore…all the futures, good and bad, that the human mind can envision.” As a fan of the science fiction genre myself, I’d have to agree with this sentiment. There is something to be said for the ability to make predictions about the future state of our world and what could cause it to get there through the use of imagination and scientific facts as well. While not every book or movie in the Sci-Fi world is guaranteed to accurately predict the future, there’s definite evidence some writers are able to look at a fictional situation in their mind and see the potential of aspects of that occurring down the line. As great writers, they do this while telling a compelling story you won’t want to stop reading.
This is exactly what author David Alomes accomplished in his second novel in this trilogy. His book, The Death of Violence, takes readers on a journey involving an alien race who decided to train a man to be a superhuman version of his former self. But when he returns to Earth intending to change human relationships as we currently know it, chaos ensues. No person or government can stand against him, so he is able to cause pain and suffering with little to no cause to back up these actions. Enter Rock Knighton — the world’s top master criminal. With these new changes, his empire is shrinking and soon it will crash and burn if he doesn’t take matters into his own hands. He comes up with a plan to defeat Samuel, the advanced human, and it quickly becomes a battle of Rock saving the Earth and its population or Samuel having everyone embrace a needed change.
The subject matter, if taken in its literal form, would not seem like a likely thing to happen in our world, but you can see the clear undertones of real-world issues we could face in the not-so-distant future. The political strife, the battle of wills with powerful people, and good vs. evil will always be relevant. Aside from these factors in our current world, the plot of this story immediately draws readers in and keeps them visualizing the events with the interwoven storylines and the compelling nature of this author’s storytelling ability.
This is a book that any Sci-Fi fan would greedily consume and be left eagerly awaiting the next in the series. Do not sleep on this novel and pick up your copy of The Death of Violence by David Alomes today!
