The Eagle and the Lion: A Matter of Honor by author Laurel Robinson is a heartwarming historical novel set in Yorktown, Virginia in 1775. The novel follows the story of Anne Morgan, a young woman who has recently lost her mother and is returning home from England with her fiancé, John, and his friend, Daniel. Upon arrival, they are met by Anne’s sister’s husband, Alexander, who informs them that Anne’s father has been attacked by bandits and is recovering at home. This is the second of a six-part series following John and Anne from England to Virginia, and back to England again.
The novel takes us on a journey through the lives of the characters as they navigate the challenges of the time, including the looming threat of war with England and the difficulties of running a plantation. Anne and John’s love story is beautifully written, with the two characters learning to trust and support each other through difficult times.
One of the standout aspects of this novel is the rich historical detail, which brings the setting and time period to life. Robinson does an excellent job of capturing the sights, sounds, and feelings of the time, making the readers feel like they are truly a part of the story. This book is an excellent escape from the tumultuous political climate we live in today – the journey to the past shows us how much has changed since the American Revolution.
The plot along with the variety of characters makes for an interesting page turner. The Eagle and the Lion can be a fast read, leaving the reader hungry for the next part of the story. It is refreshing to know there is more to the characters’ lives as the ending does not truly put an end to the story.
The book’s romantic aspect is what keeps the story interesting, however the novel also explores themes of loyalty, family, and the importance of standing up for what is right. These themes are woven seamlessly into the story, adding depth and meaning to the events that unfold. The characters are also well-developed and relatable, with their own motivations and flaws. The dialogue is easy to follow and makes the book flow very nicely.
Overall, The Eagle and the Lion: A Matter of Honor is a beautifully written and engrossing historical novel that will transport readers back in time to the tumultuous days of the American Revolution. Whether you are a history buff – or simply looking for a captivating story, this novel is sure to satisfy.
