One of the most difficult things a person can face is corruption. Whether it be a corruption of government or an individual, the battle in the face of corruption is a powerful force to overcome. As Bruce Springsteen once said, “For an adult, the world is constantly trying to clamp down on itself. Routine, responsibility, decay of institutions, corruption: this is all the world closing in.”
In author Geoff Cabin’s novel The Last Carefree Day: An Oceanic Park Mystery, a middle-aged lawyer returns to his hometown of Oceanic Park, and opens his own law practice. Life starts out great, as he spends his free time at the local coffee shop, surfing and listening to jazz at an old night club. Yet things turn dark when an old friend is found dead, and he begins to suspect the police are involved in covering up the true nature of his death. Soon he and another investigator take the case into their own hands, and they uncover a web of deceit and corruption they never would have suspected.
This is a fantastic mystery thriller. The author does a great job of creating an atmosphere which really reflects the evolving nature of the mystery and narrative. Readers feel immersed into the town and culture of Oceanic Park, and a truly memorable cast of characters make this story come alive as the author steadily establishes the setting and tone of the narrative before pulling the rug out from under the readers’ feet, and setting them up for a thought-provoking thriller.
This is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys a good mystery, suspense and thriller style novel, which invokes the classic small-town murder mystery vibe that has become so popular in mystery books. As a fan of the genre, it was easy to become invested in protagonist Ned Johnston’s story, as his work to fight for the rights of good people force him to take on some powerful and corrupt individuals from all walks of life, from the city council to big business and so much more.
Overall, this is a marvelous, evenly paced mystery that everyone should explore themselves. Full of heart, memorable characters and a truly great and established atmosphere that really immerses the reader into the narrative, author Geoff Cabin’s The Last Carefree Day: An Oceanic Park Mystery is a must-read thriller this summer. Check it out for yourselves now.
