At one point or another in every person’s life, there comes a moment of pure discovery. The moment when you come across something previously unknown, either to you or to society as a whole that gets the adrenaline pumping and changes the course or direction of your life. Whether it is a journey of self-discovery or a discovery that will affect human history, there is a lot of middle ground which allows for people to examine the concept of discovery for themselves, and to delve into the veil of the unknown. As Stephen Hawking once said, “Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.”
In author Francisco A. Vega’s The Lucky Baby Boy, the author explores a sci-fi and fantasy world where several generations of a family discover a hidden world underneath the surface of a small island. As a child, a young woman named Free made a shocking discovery. Years later, her son Frank leads his friends and family back to the island, and see the impact that discovery has had not only on their lives but the growing ecosystem of the island as a whole.
The balance the author found between middle-grade fantasy with the children’s point of views in this story and with the growing fascination and discovery that the parental characters make throughout this narrative was so engaging to read. The way the author writes really did an amazing job of utilizing imagery to paint a picture of this wonderful island of discoveries in the readers’ minds, both through the potent emotions the characters put into the narrative and the mind-blowing discoveries themselves. The story, while short and quick, packs a punch and delivers great character relationships and an evolving story readers can really delve into.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy short fiction books, especially those who enjoy science fiction and fantasy, and narratives who always find a natural way to blend the two genres together. As a fan of these genres, I found the author’s mythos and storytelling to be enriching and creatively inspired, and made for a fascinating read that I couldn’t put down.
A memorable, entertaining, and magical read, author Francisco A. Vega’s The Lucky Baby Boy is a must-read sci-fi and fantasy read. The pacing is perfect for readers who don’t always have a lot of time to sit down with a hefty novel, and yet delivered an equally enrapturing and creative journey that will keep readers invested all the way through.
