Over the last few decades alone, there have been several incidents in American politics that are dramatic enough to become an instant hit theater production all on its own. The driving force behind these incidents has to be the scandal of it all. It was Thomas Fuller who once said, “A lie has no leg, but a scandal has wings.” Scandals can carry a lofty weight all its own, and in author John Gordon Gray’s writing The President’s Affair: A Dramatization of the Clinton-Lewinsky Affair, one of the United States most infamous scandals take serious flight.
As the title indicates, this novel is a Shakespearean take on the American political scandal of President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, which dominated the American political scene years ago. The author brings a healthy blend of history, comedy and tragedy into the play that depicts the events leading up to, during and after the scandal.

This was the perfect blend of modern day politics and drama with the classic writing style of a wonderful Shakespearean play. The author’s inclusion of new characters like Bemona as Monica’s mother showcase an added familial drama to the narrative that serves to highlight the poetic nature of the scandal itself. From the affects it had on the President personally and politically to the way the scandal affected Monica Lewinsky, the author perfectly creates a tragic yet entertaining play which is worthy of the Bard himself.

This is a novel for anyone who enjoys Shakespeare, a healthy blend of humor and drama/tragedy, and U.S. Politics. As a fan of Shakespeare’s works, it was a refreshing way to talk about the well-known political scandal. The author’s command over the style of the Shakespearean play perfectly brought this series of events to life, and the backroom dealings of political figures in U.S. Politics made for the fantastic dramatic interactions between the various figures and characters within the play.

While it has been some years since the scandal hit the United States, the incident is still one of the most talked about in American history. The author’s ability to fuse this classic and iconic genre with a modern day tragedy that unfolded before the American Public’s eyes made for a truly engaging, one of a kind experience. Written in a way that could be read individually, together in a group or even better, in a play, this book showcases how modern day dramas in the social and political realm are mirroring the ancient dramas of Shakespeare himself.
