A truly remarkable field of study for scientists is that of neuroscience. The study of the mind and how it works is advancing and growing with new technology and new ways of viewing how the mind works and behaves every single day. As John O’Keefe once said, “Cognitive neuroscience is entering an exciting era in which new technologies and ideas are making it possible to study the neural basis of cognition, perception, memory and emotion at the level of networks of interacting neurons, the level at which we believe many of the important operations of the brain take place
In author Dan Grant’s book, The Singularity Transfer, the author takes readers into a world where science and medicine meet geopolitical landscapes and espionage. The second book in the “A Singularity Series,” the author goes into the mind of protagonist Thomas Parker, a neuroscientist whose work has turned into a brand-new era of a “space race.” Forced to see his project to completion in order to protect those he cares about, the discoveries he makes leads to a new era for humanity. Yet, he is in competition with his rival, Stewart Richards, and neither one of them realizes they each hold a key to unlocking the other’s mystery. When it becomes apparent that he even isn’t sure if he can trust his FBI agent girlfriend Kate Morgan, Thomas must work to solve the riddle of his work, while a New World Order rises behind the scenes.
From the beginning, the reader is immediately taken into some heart-pounding, high stakes action. Shadowy organizations hunt and threaten important figures, and the gravity of the political and scientific plot points are felt instantly. The stakes could not be higher, as the author gives readers multiple perspectives to approach the story through its narrative. Protagonist Thomas Parker is attacked immediately. It seems the ramifications of his actions in the first book, leading to a very volatile and dangerous situation, has left Kate Morgan scrambling to find out what happened to him, all the while being forced into a dangerous game of cat and mouse on the world stage by a deadly foe from her past. The author brilliantly blends detailed and engaging plot elements with memorable character development which keeps the reader invested throughout the entirety of the book.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy thrillers, suspense novels, government espionage and conspiracy theories involving secret organizations, and of course anyone with a special interest in technothrillers. As a fan of these genres, it was interesting to see the amount of detail the author put into blending the medical and scientific knowledge and study of neuroscience with the emotional depths of the characters’ relationships and the edge-of-your-seat action that the novel features.
A masterclass in suspense and medical thrillers, author Dan Grant’s The Singularity Transfer is a must-read. While certainly a lengthy read, the action and detailed storytelling, when combined with memorable characters, makes this a stellar sequel, especially with a shocking cliffhanger of an ending which undoubtably leaves room for future stories set within the universe the author has created.
