The history of the world and mankind in particular is defined by the rise and fall of empires throughout time. From the days of Ancient Greece or the Roman Empire to the Ottoman Empire or even the days when Britain ruled supreme, empires have been the cornerstones for history’s greatest and worst moments. It was the great Roman Soldier Marcus Aurelius that said, “Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future, too.” In author James Dunn’s book The United States of Empire, the moment the US went from the prominent power within its region to the moment it became the most powerful nation on Earth is documented in precise detail.
The author does a fantastic job of exploring the reasons behind the US becoming the superpower that it is today on the world’s stage. The book goes on to showcase how the US accomplished this by ignoring the nation’s first President, George Washington, who advised the nation not to interfere in the affairs of other nations, and instead during the twentieth century the country did just that in WWI and WWII.
This book was very fascinating to read. Immediately from the book’s first pages readers are hooked at the author explains in detail how the events of WWI immediately affected the start of WWII, highlighting how Adolf Hitler’s rise to power just six years after the end of the first world war was due in large part to the German people’s loss during that first war and how if Germany had not lost, the Soviets of Russia would not have become the power they were and Hitler would never have taken over as leader of the German people. It is impossible not to see history repeating itself during the modern day events of the US Empire, from the tactics leaders took to rise to power to the danger of absolute power corrupting absolutely and more.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys history, in particular United States history and the impact history has on our modern world. As a fan of history myself, I found myself drawn to the book’s deep dive into this very impactful era of history and how nations such as Germany and France were crucial to the development of the United States as the modern Empire that it is today.
This is an important, impactful and relatable historical book that readers should explore for themselves. If you haven’t yet you should grab your copy of The United States of Empire by James Dunn today, as his work is wonderful for understanding how things have gotten to the point they are today, how history impacts the world at large, and gives readers the ability to learn from that past and attempt not to repeat it themselves. Will The United States be the Empire that sustains itself fully? Or is it destined to become like all the Empires before it? Find out for yourselves.
