Oscar Wilde once said, “The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.” In the thrilling second novel in author Greg Kater’s The Warramunga series, titled The Warramunga’s Aftermath of War, readers will get a first glance look into the tragic aftermath of WWII, and the horrific crimes which will test two friends and brothers in arms who must navigate both literal and figurative murky waters.
In this novel, author Greg Later introduces readers to the lives of allies turned friends Jack “Jacko” O’Brien and Jamie Munro; after the end of the war and successfully dismantling a dangerous and murderous criminal gang which included soldiers and German spies. Now the friends find themselves tested once more, as they stumble upon a plot involving child smuggling operations that extend into a vast criminal organization spanning from Australia, the United States and even South-East Asia.
Kater does a brilliant job of balancing the raw emotions of the very serious subject of child smuggling with the action and thrills of the international spy/mystery genre. The author’s command over the international mystery element of the story plays well with the character growth between both protagonists and the colleagues, romantic interests and enemies that they encounter along the way.
This is the perfect book for anyone who enjoys action, adventure and international intrigue. It also does a fantastic job of exploring the void that WWII left behind that allowed shady, criminal activity to rise in the devastating war’s wake. As a history buff and fan of mysteries and thrillers, this story really stuck out and felt like both the perfect sequel to the first Warramunga novel by the author and a fantastic stand-alone novel anyone could jump head first into.
Overall this is a must-read novel. The writing is clear, precise and eloquently ties the action and emotions of the protagonist together in a natural way. If you enjoy stories involving criminal conspiracies, international spy and post-war government adventures, and a strong friendship that transcends all of that chaotic and pulse-pounding adventure, then Greg Kater’s The Warramunga’s Aftermath of War is the novel for you.
