One of the most liked elements of the best of books is the transformation that the characters go through. Sometimes, the change is experienced within – and in some cases, it’s visible at the distance a character goes in order to achieve their purpose. The book we are reviewing today deals with the latter case. Toxic Minds by author Anthony Lee is a mega medical thriller that shines an ominous light on the intersection of healthcare and disinformation – and a little more.
Readers are introduced to hospital physician Dr. Mark Lin who risks it all for his patients and in the quest for truth. Following a suicide bombing incident in his hospital, Mark comes to know about a secretive healing cult – called Path to Purity – that was apparently behind the bombing that cost a patient’s life. Bent on discovering the truth and stopping more such incidents from taking place, Dr. Mark decides to join the cult himself.
Will he be able to destroy the cult and come out with the truth? Or will he have to suffer a fate he couldn’t have imagined? Well, uncovering the truth will be the farthest thing from easy – as Sun Priest, the inexplicable leader of the cult, would go to any length to protect what’s his.
The writer has done a wonderful job of upholding a suspenseful atmosphere throughout the book. The characters have all got depth – and there is a sort of magical (not necessarily positive) aura around a few of them. Another impressive thing about the book is how well the incidents are spaced out. Though it’s an over 400-page read, you hardly ever feel lost – and most importantly, the curiosity to find out what’s in the upcoming pages never diminishes.
Toxic Minds is a book to pick next. It’s got some engrossing elements of thrill, suspense, meaning, and adventure – that’s sure to keep you flipping through. In case you are looking for a book to keep you from being bored on long journeys, make this one your next read. Toxic Minds a must-read for anyone who loves medical thrillers that explore the dark side of science and human ambition.
