The curtain has come down on the Twin River series with the sinister and thrilling finale novel by Michael Fields, Twin River IV: C U When U Get There. A story that encompasses the epic fight between good and evil, this book will not be a disappointment to loyal readers and new readers alike. Full of action, suspense, and tense moments, this novel, while quite long, feels like a short read because you just can’t stop to put it down.
The book begins with familiar characters from Field’s other novels, Abe and his nephew Cain. Together, always lurking, they bring horror and death to those around them — and they have a great time doing so. I must admit I do not find these characters to have any redeeming qualities as the story begins; they are the kind of villains you love to cheer against. Even the setting of the story is detestable with dry, predator-filled, hot desert conditions, which I think was a unique literary tool by the author. Often my reading is affected by how much I like or dislike the main characters; after all, most of us like to read about someone with which we have things in common. The fact that I disliked the characters so much actually goes to show what a great job Fields did in writing the book. Cain and Abe made my skin crawl and brought discomfort, yet I couldn’t put the book down. I had to see if justice would be served in the end.
While our first introduction to characters in the book brings the worst of the worst, upon arriving in Twin River the reader is introduced to a new set of characters that are a stark contrast to Cain and Abe. What a juxtaposition this is the feelings and emotions the first parts of the book bring. Suddenly the reader has heroes such as Gene Brook and Stanley Banks to cheer on and route for. It was a refreshing change during for me, as I found that the pure evil from Cain and Abe left me exhausted.
The constant theme is the fight between good and evil. What a great resolution to the series that good has overcome. However, another theme is also present, as the ending leaves you to wonder the future of Twin River. It is a reminder that evil is always there, hiding in the background, ready to come out when given a chance. There are also quite a few religious inferences during the book, which adds an additional flair to the story.
Overall, I think the author and readers alike can be more than satisfied with this book. What a great way to end a series for all the readers who have loved it through the years!
