One of the more highly talked about and sometimes highly contested subjects in the world is sex. Whether you are open and free about sexuality and how you express yourself through it, or are more conservative and prefer to keep that part of yourself private, sex is a constant, daily part of our lives. Trying to keep a positive attitude about sex is critical for a healthy mental living and development from adolescence into adulthood. As Sue Johanson once said, “Sex is… perfectly natural. It’s something that’s pleasurable. It’s enjoyable and it enhances a relationship. So why don’t we learn as much as we can about it and become comfortable with ourselves as sexual human beings because we are all sexual?”
In author Robert Beatty’s Wanda’s Tower, the author explores sexuality through the eyes of protagonist Wanda. After a night in a motel during her teenage years allows her
to listen to a couple being intimate in the room next door, Wanda has a sexual awakening, and goes into her adult years becoming a skilled pick-up artist, learning to have passionate nights before leaving her conquest behind the next day. However, things take a turn when her professional career as an electronics technician collides with her private life. Her latest conquest ends up at her latest work site the next day, and she soon realizes she will be in close contact with the man during the project. Breaking her “one and done” deal, Wanda engages with the man physically once more, and soon he begins falling in love with her. Not wanting to give up her free life, Wanda must contend with whether or not she will end things with this man forever or give herself over to the possibility of love.
For such a sexually-forward book, the author managed to do a really great job of character growth and complexity with the narrative. Leave no room for doubt: this is definitely an erotica novel, with a lot of in-depth study of sexual development and sexual encounters, from sexual awakenings in our teenage years to one-night stands and the more complicated relationship change in one’s sexual history. Yet the author managed to capture the intense and structured way the protagonist approaches all aspects of her life, both in her intimacy and her professional life. The shock to her system, so to speak, upon meeting Chuck was a storyline which really drew the reader in, and kept readers engaged throughout the narrative.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy erotica, in particular erotica that also blends in elements of romance and drama. The author does a fantastic job of bringing out the detailed nature of this genre without allowing the plot or characters to suffer for it, crafting a narrative that will draw readers in just as much as the explicit nature of the story itself.
A memorable, engaging, and captivating erotica novel, author Robert Beatty’s Wanda’s Tower is a must-read novel for fans of the genre. Heart-pounding and gripping in the narrative’s delivery, the balance of character growth with the more sexual nature of the genre really helped bring a more connective feeling to the story overall.
