Darling Downs is a small quiet town in Queensland. When a mysterious clown arrives into town, no one questions him aside from one man. The townspeople are not too concerned about this man entertaining their children as they focus on their drought related struggles. One man questions the clowns motives and identity. Detective Willow spends his time researching and investigating which leads him down an interesting path. His concerns for the children within his community when he uncovers a drug syndicate that has been operating within this small town. In order to save his small town, he strives to uncover the truth behind the drug ring and the clown’s connection to it.
Clowns are known to be something that can cause fear in the hearts of some people, so when a mysterious clown shows up and only one man questions his intention — what an interesting idea and storyline by author Bobby Beaver in his book titled Warwick. It’s also showing how mundane and dry this town is prior to the arrival of the clown. The character interaction resembles something that you would imagine from a small town. The dialogue is presented in a way which makes it difficult to understand who is speaking or even if the statement is made internally or to another character. At times it does get difficult to follow the communication between different characters or get a good feel on what their character types are based on dialogue.
Beaver has a beautiful way with words and how he describes each scene. There is something beautifully intricate about how he writes that makes the reader truly appreciate the work which went into writing this novel. There is a scene where he describes the bliss of marriage, a night just for a couple. This scene is written in a way that doesn’t feel like one is reading an erotic novel or anything of the sort, but getting a private glimpse into the characters lives. Readers are unable to predict what will happen next and will be hooked into the story just to see where Beaver will take the story. It is easy to get lost within this book, meaning there are parts where you will lose time and others where readers may be confused about what is happening.
Overall this was a good book to read, it was fairly easy to immerse into the storyline and wonder what will happen next for the town of Darling Downs. Even when completed, readers will find themselves wondering if we would get the opportunity to read more about Darling Downs and Detective Willow. This book would be a great book for those who enjoy a good mystery and suspenseful novel. It is one of those books which would get readers interested in a specific author for the first time.
