It is often said that one of the most universal languages that we as humans have discovered is mathematics. Math is an essential part of so many aspects of our society, whether that be finances, science and technology, transportation, and even space exploration. It is even said that if we were to ever encounter or engage with intelligent life beyond our planet, the first language we would share would in fact be mathematics. As Catherine Asaro once said, “To solve math problems, you need to know the basic mathematics before you can start applying it.”
In author Lillian Beaulieu Gibbs’s We Will Solve It, the author approaches math in a way which is accessible to children. In this short read, the author shares what they describe as the commutative property of multiplication to children. Through the lessons and examples shown in this book, readers will be able to share with their child and help them learn and recognize the first property used in Algebra, something that will be essential in later years of schooling. It also helps the reader’s children to relate to the basic skills associated with addition and division.
The author did an incredible job of creating an educational and exceptional learning experience. The reader will definitely see this book benefit their child’s journey to understanding mathematics and the basic building blocks of Algebra. What readers should keep in mind is that this booklet is something to be paired with a companion CD, which when used in unison with one another helps the child to pair audio and visual cues to imprint the lessons the authors is attempting to teach. The writing style and blend of colorful imagery and graphs allowed readers to be able to convey the author’s lessons to children in a refreshing and engaging way, making this such an important read for students struggling in math.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy math, or for those readers who read non-fiction educational booklets and have children who are in need of help with the basics of multiplication and Algebra.
